The first part introduces into the history of parallelism in the early Chinese written record. The second part will focus on changing functions of parallelism in early Chinese texts. It will argue that parallelism provides a means of going beyond the law of excluded middle and constructs a logical dimension in which the third may be given (<em>tertium\u00a0datur<\/em>).
