Reading Group Tractatus

Background

From May 17 to June 16 the Joint Research Center in Logic of Tsinghua University and the University of Amsterdam organises the on-line Centennial Lectures Series to commemorate the fact that in 2021 it is 100 years ago that Wittgenstein’s Tractatus was first published.

The lectures will be given by renowned experts on Wittgenstein’s early work, and will address various aspects of the Tractatus: ways of reading the text; the role played by logic; the connections with ethics; the impact the book has had; and the context in which it was written.

More information, including the list of speakers, time schedule, and information on how to register for the series, can be found on the following website:

Reading group

By way of preparation, we organise a short, intensive reading group that is strictly focussed on reading the text of the Tractatus itself. This will allow students and interested faculty members, who haven’t read the Tractatus or who want to refresh their memory of it, to prepare for the lecture series so as to maximise its benefits.

Format

Like the Centennial Lectures Series, this event will be on-line, via Zoom. It will run for two weeks, with two sessions of two hours per week. An extension with a fifth session week can be considered if need arises.

Each meeting will be devoted to a discussion of a specific portion of the text. It will feature short introductions by Hao Tang and/or Martin Stokhof; identification of problematic passages; questions and discussions by all participants.

Reckon with two hours of preparation for each two hour session.

The reading group will meet four times, on April 12, 16, 19 and 23, with a possible additional fifth meeting on April 29.
