Tips on taxi and metro in Beijing

– Taking a Taxi in Beijing

  • Taxis in Beijing do not accept credit cards, so if you can’t pay online, please carry cash for taxis.  Taxi drivers may not have change for large bills, so keeping small denominations of RMB (¥20, ¥50) can be convenient.
  • Beijing’s rush hour (7:00-9:00 AM and 5:00-7:00 PM on weekdays) can significantly increase travel times. Consider alternative transport or schedule your travel outside these times.
  • For a more convenient option, consider using an online taxi service like DiDi, which allows for easy payment via the app, including credit card and mobile payment options. Be aware that the pickup area for DiDi taxis is different from that of official taxis. If you plan to book a ride with DiDi, ensure you follow the instructions provided in the app or airports to locate the designated pickup area accurately.

– Buying Metro Tickets in Beijing

  • Ticket vending machines are available at all metro stations and support English. You can buy single-journey tickets or recharge a Yikatong (Beijing Transportation Smart Card). When buying a metro ticket, you may need to enter your passport or ID number. If you face any issues, seek help from staff or buy tickets at the service desk.
  • You’ll need your ticket to enter and exit the metro system, so keep it handy until you leave the station at your final destination.
  • For convenience, you can purchase a Yikatong card from the ticket window or customer service center at any major metro station. It can be used for multiple journeys and offers a slight discount on fares.
